Lighting Selections with Hudson Valley Lighting

The lighting in our 2020 Utah Valley Parade of Home was one of my personal favorites to pull together.  Lighting is the statement piece of every room and plays a big influence on the design and feel of a home.

I am excited to share a few of my favorite features and source the selections used with Hudson Valley Lighting.

Lighting is one of the first elements I consider when designing a home.  Never underestimate what lighting can do for a space.  Here are my top 3 lighting design tips to consider when selecting lighting for a home.

1. LIGHTING IS A REFLECTION OF YOUR STYLE

Your lighting should be a reflection of your style, and how you want to feel in your space.  Helping clients to understand how they want their home to feel, helps me in identifying a style that is perfectly suited for their space.  Spend time understanding what styles you identify with before you begin making selections.  Spend time researching finished spaces to inspire you to see more of our projects for inspiration head over to our Portfolio.

I enjoyed mixing the classic Melo Park chandeliers and sconces from Hudson Valley Lighting in our take of a modern moody classic primary bath.

We used the Menlo Park Hudson Valley chandelier fixture in the primary bedroom shown in antique nickel

2. TO MIX OR NOT TO MIX METAL FINISHES

There is no wrong or right way to consider the use of metals, I highly encourage experimenting with your metal finishes.  I push my clients to consider their style before we move forward with introducing metals.  When I do mix metals, I like to work within selections that are in complementary tones.  I find the best way to see if mixing the metals is to create a design board for reference.  Hudson Valley Lighting offers over 85 different finishes in their lighting selection which makes them a great option when considering your lighting.

This nook was the perfect opportunity to accent the Vernon picture light by Hudson Valley Lighting against a beautiful dark accent wall.

The white cabinets feature an oil-rubbed bronze hardware finish that really frames out and accents the Vernon light fixture.

I used the Sutton from Hudson Valley in Old Bronze and kept these metal finishes all in the dark bronze or black metal family

3. SIZE THE FIXTURE TO YOUR SPACE

Before falling too hard for a light fixture.  Make sure it fits the size and scale of your room.  Measure it out, place it at the right height and location, think through all possible elevations to make sure it is the right piece for your space.  Your Electrician will thank you for knowing this before you have him on the ladder placing the light’s height.  Your wallet will thank you for ordering the correct size of light the first time.  Trust me selecting the right size light is one of the most important parts in selecting the right light.

This Classic No. 1 Hudson Valley Light fixture is the perfect size, scale, and height for a ceiling chandelier considering roof slope, window location, and ceiling details.

The Latham sconce by Hudson Valley Lighting is perfectly placed around the game’s bar table. Ensuring head clearance and visual lines for a great entertaining space.
